Basic Research

Our research laboratory focuses on pancreatology (diseases of the pancreas - with a special focus on pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer) and pneumology (lung diseases).

The central aim of our working group is to uncover the precise genetic and molecular mechanisms underlying pancreatitis, and furthermore how pancreatitis and other risk factors such as obesity contribute to pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). Additionally, we address molecular mechanisms underlying pancreatic neuroendocrine tumours (PanNET). To achieve these aims we apply in vitro an ex vivo studies in 2D and 3D cell line models including established cell lines and primary cells from our biobank and in vivo studies in humanized pancreatitis, PDAC and PanNET mouse models. We use a broad range of methods, ranging from numerous cell and molecular biology methods to assess transcript and protein levels by NGS based transcriptomic or proteomic analysis. We work in cooperation with numerous local, national and international groups and most of our projects are closely embedded within the Research Training Group (RTG) 2751 InCuPanC.

Topics for medical doctoral thesis, master thesis and research group internships - embedded in our research projects – are regularly available for human medicine, biology, biochemistry and chemistry students. Interested student are welcome contacting directly:
